Famously sunny, the Vendee is as sleepy a part of rural France as any, but edged by a strip of fabulous beaches and resorts which spring to Life in the summer (come here out of season and you may drive for hours in search of life).

Not too much in the way of heritage to explore, but no surprise that the beaches are backed by some of the biggest camp sites anywhere in France. St Jean de Monts and les Sables d’Olonne are the major resorts.
